Web-based Activities and Interactive Tools
The GK curriculum supplement includes two web-based activities, Assemble a Cell and Genetic unMash, and three other interactive tools, including quizzes, puzzles, and flash cards. Web Activity Guides for the two activities are included with the GK curriculum supplement download. You can refer your students to these activities and interactive tools to help them to review genetic concepts and vocabulary.
Activities
Assemble a Cell
In Assemble a Cell, student review prior knowledge needed to complete Module 1: The Great DNA Extraction. In Assemble a Cell, students select a plant cell, an animal cell, or an organelle to assemble. Prior to assembling the cell, students read about the function and location of the organelle. When students are ready to play the game, they select the “Assemble a cell” option next to the timer. Location information for each organelle pops-up once the student correctly places the organelle in the cell.
Genetic unMash
Genetic unMash is designed to reinforce prior knowledge needed for Module 10: Blood type: What is your type? In Genetic unMash, students are introduced to Punnett Squares. Students complete two different activities to practice Punnett Squares. In the first activity, students identify the probability that a person will have a certain phenotype by examining a Punnett Square. In the second activity, students determine the combination of alleles from the parents that result in a specific probability of a child of having a trait.
